Lemur Leaf Frog (Hylomantis lemur)

Today, in between doing some more packing to move and tidying up, and while watching some YouTube videocasts, I came across a Brave Wilderness video about the Rarest Frog in the World? so was inspired to get out my iPad and capture yet another creature in my sketchbook.

This is the Lemur Leaf Frog (Hylomantis lemur), is a native frog that lives in the rainforests of Colombia, Costa Rica, and Panama.
Unfortunately—largely due to habitat loss and fungal disease—this beautiful creature is currently listed as Critically Endangered, meaning it’s just one step away from becoming completely Extinct.
Conservation efforts are currently being conducted but its low population in the wild means we may lose this wonderful animal. Hopefully, we can help it get back to more reasonable numbers.

Its most distinguishing features are its long, skinny legs which it uses mostly to crawl and climb trees and leaves, rather than jumping. Additionally, it changes colour from the depicted bright green during the day, to a dark brown during the night which helps it to hunt while staying camouflaged.

Had you seen or heard of the Lemur Leaf Frog before?  I hadn’t, but I’m glad I did and hopefully this drawing serves to spread the word and somehow help this creature thrive once more.

Well, feel free to rate and leave a comment below. Your feedback is highly appreciated.
